In this talk, I review results on finite time blow-up and on pattern formation for macroscopic chemotaxis models. I will emphasize variations of the classical chemotaxis model that lead to global existence of solutions (regularizations).  In addition, I  will use the non-local gradient and a fourth order derivative to classify spikes versus plateaus.
