Information

The Centre for Mathematical Biology (CMB) at the University of Oxford is part of the Mathematical Institute and was established in 1983 under the directorship of James D. Murray FRS as the first centre of its kind in Britain. Since 1992, the CMB has been under the leadership of Professor Philip K. Maini. The CMB embodies mathematicians, physicists and biologists from different fields, emphasising lively and multidisciplinary teamwork with other research groups within the university, the UK and abroad. The types of problems investigated at the CMB are characterised by complex nonlinear feedback mechanisms and it is now being increasingly recognised that the outcome of such interactions can only be understood through mathematical and computational models. The research problems include understanding pattern formation events in early development; elucidating the design principles that lead to blood vessel formation and remodelling, with potential application to drug-borne therapies which may combat cancer; modelling the electrophysiology of the heart; understanding enzyme reactions; exploring reasons underlying species diversity; developing models for spread of diseases; studying social insect behaviour. Since its initiation, the CMB has had an intensive program, with an average of six graduate students at a time reading for the DPhil in Mathematics, and about 10-15 senior academic visitors per year.
