Referee 1 ******************************************* E: Referee Comments (For Author and Editor) ------------------------------ A very good paper with an introduction I wish I had put into my own submission; I essentially have no comments beyond the noting of a couple of typos: Section 3: method the -> method by which the? Section 4.4: inherit -> inherent Section 7: inherit -> inherent Referee 2 ******************************************* The Gateway Computational Web Portal Overview : This paper is an overview of Gateway and the services it provides. The paper describes overall design philosophy, software components, and relevant issues. Finally, the paper discusses future direction and technologies to watch. Review : As noted in the paper, Gateway has a significant history and has uncovered many of the problems in actual implementation that are not obvious during the design phase. Of particular significance are local HPC policies and security concerns. The paper does an excellent job of explaining the design decisions and the components that comprise Gateway. The section on security is excellent and hints at a move away from client installed software. As with most Java heavy systems, the casual reader will need to become familiar with much of the terminology and concepts. For the intended audience however, I feel the level of complexity is absolutely appropriate. Referee 3 ******************************************* E: Referee Comments (For Author and Editor) ------------------------------ Technical content is good, reasonable clear discussion of Kerberos and CORBA issues and architecture. One unanswered question in my mind is why the Charon solution was kept when the SSL solution is so much cleaner. If there was a problem with the SSL solution (either technical or adminsistrative) it should have been covered. F: Presentation Changes There are a number of formatting problems with this paper, which exist in the PDF file, but may not exist in the source file. Problems include: insufficient space between line at top and text missing footnote markers for institutions in title section heading misplaced on page 10 near bottom (overlays text) screen images are at too low a resolution
