To: Panelists for the ESE Computational Technology Requirements Workshop On behalf of Jack Kaye and George Komar, I thank you again for agreeing to participate as panelists in the ESE workshop to be held April 30th through May 2nd in Washington, DC. I want to give you a heads up on how the workshop is structured. Some of you have asked if you should bring presentation materials. We are discouraging any formal presentations because this is intended to be an open discussion of plans for the future and not presentation of science results. Please join us for a breakfast meeting at 8:30 Tuesday morning. You will be directed to the room when you pick up your registration materials. Enclosed please find the detailed agenda and a set of charts expanding on the workshop charter. In order to help you guide the discussion, we have suggested some questions that you might want to use to prompt discussion. These are not meant to be the only questions or even the right questions but a starting point for fulfilling the workshop charter. Co-chairs are encouraged to discuss the workshop goals in advance and prepare a plan for their group. We have reserved a half hour for you to meet with your panel at 9AM on Tuesday to discuss process or charter or anything else you want to before we begin the workshop. A briefing of the final report from this workshop to the Associate Administrator of the Office of Earth Science has been scheduled to take place Thursday May 23. I look forward to meeting you on Tuesday morning. -Jim Fischer === Draft Workshop Agenda === ============================= Day 1 [Tuesday April 30] ----- 8:30 - Pre-workshop meeting with panelists (for location check at registration desk) 8:45 - Charge to the Panelists - Robert Ferraro/JPL 9:00 - Panelists in each session meet to discuss procedures, assignments, etc. 9:30 - Plenary session Welcome and Introduction Azita Valinia/NASA HQ 9:35 - Opening Remarks George Komar/Earth Science Technology Office 9:45 - Keynote: Overview of NASA's ESE Research and Modeling Strategy: Current Status and Future Goals Jack Kaye/NASA HQ 10:15 - Charge to participants Robert Ferraro/JPL 10:30 - Break into Weather, Climate, Solid Earth parallel sessions to: - Identify the Earth Science Enterprise computing capabilities required to achieve the Earth System Prediction Goals and applications strategy for 2010 and beyond. - Evaluate current ESE computing capabilities against these requirements. - Determine and quantify what gaps in capabilities exist. - Determine which gaps can be addressed by advances in computational technologies. 12:00-1:30 Lunch break (on your own) 1:30 - Continue parallel sessions 4:00 - Plenary session to Report Day's Results - Weather - Climate - Solid Earth 5:00 - Main sessions adjourn - Panelists caucus to determine Day 2 session organization around technology focus areas.
