This can be a problem as there are no tuition benefits unless student is on payroll. I have got conflicting views as to implementation of this rule. Here is my interpretation: Vacation is possible if it a) Does not impact deadlines of project employing student b) It is both true and perceived to be true that vacation time can be made up by additional work while student not on vacation. One must make up both research and any course work ( including independent study) c) Student understands current highly challenging job environment where good resumes will be essential Here is my summary of numbers I assume a student works on research related topics for a) 30 hours a week for 8 months of year (this is fall and spring semesters). This is for students taking significant classes b) 60 hours a week for 4 months of year (This is 3 months from sum of Summer Sessions I and II plus 2 week inter-semester break at Christmas and 2 week August lull between Summer II and fall semester) This represents 40 hours per week average. I believe that a reasonable interpretation of b) and c) is that two week vacations can be taken each year without going off payroll Note that 2 weeks during summer can be considered as equivalent to 3 average weeks.
