Canberra, Australia -- As reported by the Australian Associated Press, Scientists from China, Japan and the United States would join Australian experts in an international project using high-performance computers to probe earthquake behaviour, Science Minister John Moore announced.

"This is the first APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) collaborative research project to be led by Australia," Moore said in a statement. Moore also said the project aimed to develop realistic supercomputer simulation models of the complete earthquake generation process.

"Ultimately, this will lead to a better understanding of hazardous regions and indicators of earthquakes and could lead to a major breakthrough in the understanding of earthquake behaviour," Moore said.

"The project is an indication of Australian scientists' ability to compete in the international arena and places Australia at the forefront in the use of high-performance computers to solve problems of global significance," Moore said.
