C340 Referee Report
This is a solid paper, which makes a few good points. I find the title misleading as 
surely from an application point of view the word visualization usually refers to the 
viewing of scientific data and not (important but different) topics described in this paper. 
I suggest clarifying this by systematic use of a term such as "performance visualization". 
I also found the emphasis on "networked systems" as either misleading or unproven -- 
namely I did not see why the two-phase approach is not useful on all machines.
The paper is very well written but lengthy -- I wonder if it can be shortened and 
still make its points.
I note that the figures are in my review copy, a rather washed out gray. The vivid 
colors described in the text are not apparent. I think you should clarify if figures will be 
published in color or gray scale and adjust text accordingly.

This paper is reasonably well written and addresses an interesting area. However 
it does not identify its key contributions and I cannot recommend it for publication in its 
current form. It is unfortunate that the only data presented is for an obsolete machine -- 
the KSR. Further there is too little discussion of the "region" ansatz explored for 
scheduling tasks. What are the common characteristics of the applications that can 
usefully exploit this idea? You should identify those features of applications where your 
approach has advantages or disadvantages compared to other approaches.
The paper should mention one of the most commonly used systems -- CC++ or its 
analog Fortran-M.

This is a clearly written paper, which is a serious sophisticated discussion of an 
important problem. There is one obvious general difficulty in that the discussion is is 
rather dated. This is exhibited by the use of the KSR1 as target and by text "will be 
released in 1995" in last section. Some of the material has been around for some time!
One does not need to redo the nice KSR application study. However I recommend 
updating some of the general remarks and timings to include more up to date machines.
