Your dearest lover and fiancee, Judy - who wish to sleep in your arms every night National Laboratory of Software Development Environments 1. Background Knowledge With the support of State Planning Commission, the State Education Commission and Leading Aviation Industry of China, the Laboratory started construction in 1991 with a loan from International Bank and was officially authorized to open to the international academic community in October, 1992. In 1995, it passed the inspection. The laboratory adopts the fund system and the director is Professor Li Wei, who is a member of Academic Degrees of Committee of the State Council, Vice Chairman of the Steering Committee of Chinese Hi-Tech Development Program Intelligent Computing System Project, Director of National Laboratory of Software Development Environment, the state's distinguished expert. Professor Sun ZhongXiu, the academician of China's Academy of Sciences takes the position of the director of the Academic Committee of the laboratory. Now, the lab has 16 fixed stuffs, among which are 14 researchers of advanced rank and 2 managers. 2. Main research interests Evolutionary models of software development, fast algorithms for heuristic solutions of NP complete problems, computer network software environments, software testing environments, parallel algorithms and scalable architecture, logical foundation of artificial intelligence. 3. Conditions for technology development and research In addition to the loan of US$1,200,000 from International Bank, the Laboratory has obtained a fund of Yuan$12,000,000 since 1988, of which Yuan$6,000,000 was used to purchase experimental equipment. Now, the lab has more than 50 advanced work stations of various kinds, including one SUN SPARC-2000 server and one SUN-670 server, 37 SUN work stations and 8 SGI work stations. These computer facilities are set up as a local-area network with SUN SPARC-2000 server as its center. Moreover, the network has a full duplex connection with International Internet through ghe University Campus network and China's Academy of Science network. Thus, it becomes an important research base for "863" high technology, National "95" Scaling Plan, as well as key projects of Science Engineering Commission, and key projects of Natural Science Funding Agency and Astronautic Funding Agency. 4. Conditions for training professionals The laboratory now has graduate, doctor and postdoctor (here I need a noun to describe a system/unit for postdoctoral fellow to go on research for 1-2 years) of computer software. It has established the capability to train professionals to the highest international level. The laboratory has 2 doctoral level supervisors, 35 graduates on campus in 1996, 29 Ph.D students (one international) and postdoctoral fellows (one international). Besides, it plans to accept several international students studying for Master's degree or Doctor's degree every year. 5. International communication and cooperation Adhering to the principle of "develop while opening to the outside," the laboratory has many times invited American, British, French and Canadian scholars to come here for academic discussions and collaborative activities. It has also sent many scholars abroad for international conferences and reviews. At present, 5 people of the laboratory are abroad to study for degrees and do research. The laboratory has agreed to more than 6 months' cooperation and lecturing with professor Goodman and Professor Pei Min of Michigan University in America, professor Huang Wenqi of Technical Institute of Northeast China, and Professor Lin Zuoquan of Computer Department of Shantou University. 6. Main research achievements Since 1990, the Laboratory has undertaken 254 research projects with a total funding level of Yuan$163,220,000. It has won several prizes among which are 3 national prizes (one first-class prize, 2 second-class prizes), 17 prizes awarded by Aviation Ministry, 5 awards honored as Excellent Software in Beijing area, 3 prizes awarded by Science and Engineering Commission of Civil Defense. Up to now, the laboratory has 327 papers published, among which 65 papers were published at international conferences, 3 published in international key journals, 12 in Science of China, 2 in Science Report and 153 in key domestic computer publications. Many of these papers are frequently quoted both inside and outside China. Some of the papers are regarded as "original work" by international academic field.
