It s important to implement classification scheme that will provide browsing structures for subject-based information. It is also important for different users/application developers to agree on format so they could make use of the online library.

There are several classification schemes in existence to code regular catalog based libraries. I suggest we use one of those standards and apply classification scheme to online library.

Some of the most famous classification schemes that are currently in use are: Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC); Universal Decimal Classification (UDC); Library of Congress Classification (LCC); Nederlandse Basisclassificatie (BC); Sveriges Allmäma Biblioteksförening (SAB); Iconclass; National Library of Medicine (NLM); Engineering Information (Ei); Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC) and the ACM Computing Classification System (CCS).

Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) for example has several grouping layers starting with ten most general:

000 Generalities

010 Bibliographies & catalogs

020 Library & information sciences

030 General encyclopedic works

040 Unassigned

050 General serials & their indexes

060 General organizations & museology

070 News media, journalism, publishing

080 General collections

090 Manuscripts & rare books

 each of them being futher broken down into subsequent smaller level e.g.,

100 Philosophy & Psycology

110 Metaphysics

120 Epistemology, causation, humankind

130 Paranormal phenomena

140 Specific philosophical schools

150 Psychology

160 Logic

170 Ethics (Moral philosophy)

180 Ancient, medieval, Oriental philosophy

190 Modern Western philosophy

Also, I suggest we use call number system. A call number will consist of two parts. First one is the coded information on the location of the book/artifact and the second is Dewey Decimal Classification. Same would apply to music and art. We would need to come up with music genres and art types and assign codes to our artifacts.

I suggest, the XML based card catalog keyword/metadata system with following attributes and elements:

<artifact type = “book” call_number = f23.3454.170.12  status=“checked out”

            <author>

                        <name_first>Alan </name_first>

</author>

            <ISBN>0-324-01207-1<ISBN>

            <edition>5</edition>

            <year>2000</year>

            <publisher>Southwestern College Publishing</publisher>

</artifact>
