We invite you to participate in the UK-US Workshop on Grid Computing that will be held at the Hotel Nikko, San Francisco on August 4-5 (yes, Saturday and Sunday) just before the tenth High-Performance Distributed Computing (HPDC-10) conference (http://www-itg.lbl.gov/hpdc10/). Below is a statement of the purpose of the workshop and the preliminary agenda. 

Because there is so little time before the workshop will take place, we took the liberty of suggesting speakers for some of the topics to be covered without first contacting the people who are listed.   Since there isn’t time for all participants to make formal presentations, we encourage you to submit a position paper relevant to the purpose of the workshop, as described below.  These papers would be most useful if they were circulated at least a few days before the workshop.

Travel expenses for US participants will be covered by an NSF grant that we are submitting to CISE/ACIR.  The UK participants’ travel will be supported by the UK Science Research Councils.   A nearly final list of confirmed participants from the UK is at the end of this message.

We apologize for sending invitations so late; we have just been swamped with other tasks for the last two months.  We do hope you will accept this invitation to participate in the workshop despite the short notice.  As you probably know, the UK e-Science program is an exciting and vigorous one and this workshop should help us identify productive collaborative efforts.

Purpose of workshop
Identify grid activities that could be carried out jointly, in the context of the US -UK MOU (attached), especially activities that are likely to lead to improved infrastructure for international scientific research.

Explore common interests in both applications and infrastructure (middleware, networking) that would warrant, and benefit from, the creation of a high-speed transatlantic testbed.

If such a testbed is desirable, begin to develop a technical agenda for a high-speed transatlantic testbed
