Foil 35 How to teach Programming!

From Experiences in electronic Education and Training -- Computer science/HPCC Education DoD Modernization Users Group Meeting San Diego -- 24 June 97. by Geoffrey C. Fox *

1 We teach Perl Java JavaScript SQL PL/SQL HPF Fortran90 and MPI
  • Imbed programming into lectures and support student homework with a Web Interface
2 HPF Fortran90 and MPI are hardest as need special Web Integration
  • This is Dincer's VPL used by Syracuse and Cornell Virtual Workshop
3 Other languages are easier to teach because the are more or less Web ready but require some modest technology to properly show students program, data and results
4 Traditional central displays difficult as often need to "scroll" to see details of a nontrivial program
  • So teach using TangoWisdom broadcast to PC laboratory so that students (with their own machine) can do their own scrolling
