Foil 114 History -- Minicomputer

From Master Foilset for HPC Achitecture Overview CPS615 Basic Simulation Track for Computational Science -- Fall Semester 98. by Geoffrey C. Fox

1 "Minicomputer" approach
  • Almost all microprocessor systems have a bus
  • Motivated by multiprogramming, TP
  • Used heavily for parallel computing
  • Called symmetric multiprocessor (SMP)
  • Latency larger than for uniprocessor
  • Bus is bandwidth bottleneck
    • caching is key: coherence problem
  • Low incremental cost
