Foil 4 Why is Java worth looking at for Scientific Computing?

From Introduction to Java Tutorial Aimed at Scientific Users NAVO Tutorial -- Sept 23 1998. by Geoffrey C. Fox

1 The Java Language has several good design features
  • secure, safe (wrt bugs), object-oriented, familiar (to C C++ and even Fortran programmers)
2 Java has a very good set of libraries covering everything from commerce, multimedia, images to math functions (under development at http://math.nist.gov/javanumerics)
3 Java has best available electronic and paper training and support resources
4 Java is rapidly getting best integrated program development environments
5 Java naturally integrated with network and universal machine supports powerful "write once-run anywhere" model
6 There is a large and growing trained labor force
7 Can we exploit this in computational science?
