  • S/MIME allows users of Web messaging clients (Netscape Messenger) to send encrypted messages and authenticate received messages
  • asymmetric encryption: RSA
  • symmetric encryption: RC2, Triple DES
  • public key size : 1024 bits
  • uses X.509v3 certificates to authenticate owner of the public key
