A mix of outside perspective and PET activities
  • PET work must participate in and take advantage of best practice world wide
  • Last year we had talks from Microsoft and DoD ADL Initiative
Geoffrey Fox, NPAC at Syracuse University -- TangoInteractive for PET Distance Education and Training
Professor Willie Brown, Jackson State University, Asst. VP for Information Technology -- Experiences and Potential for distance Learning
Dr. Doug Gordin SRI International -- Projections for Collaborative Tools from the NSF Education Community

TangoInteractive enables computers (and their users) to be linked over the Internet with
  • Basic Tools: Audio Video Conferencing, Chat Rooms, White Boards
  • Shared Web Pages, Shared Java Applets, GIS, Visualization
  • and states of these applications synchronized in real time
Tango supports Real time Sharing of "Distributed Objects"
Uses DREN to deliver training and education
Distance Education and Training Activities
  • PET training with OSC showing the way
  • Teaching computational science and Internet technologies at Jackson State where we have completed 4th semester of classes given twice a week from Syracuse to Jackson State
  • Just finished Middle and High School Java Academy with sites in Syracuse Boston Houston and Mississippi

Links Interactive (synchronous) and self-paced (asynchronous) collaborative models
  • While lecturing, teacher selects curriculum on the web
  • After class, students accesses this and other web resources in their own time
Runs on Windows 95,98,NT UNIX (Irix, Solaris, Linux)
Supports multi-language shared server and client applications in Java, Javabeans, C++ and JavaScript (W3C DOM)
Develop applications to support particular collaborative activities
  • Education and Training: identify and support particular course development models
  • Management: Distance Briefings
  • Collaborative Computing: Custom link to particular Computing Resources (Visualization, Telnet etc.)
  • Command and Control: Original Tango funding from Rome/Darpa

Tango can be downloaded freely from http://www.npac.syr.edu/tango
  • 50 downloads a week; 20% of these servers
Upgrade core technology in areas such as browser independence, security, multiple community support, archiving
Enable broader deployment of Tango-Interactive
  • Improve User Support and documentation .....
So what is the problem?
  • We are "just" a University research group supporting software built on top of wonderful web technology (e.g. browsers) which have bugs and change rapidly
  • e.g. it appears that Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 will win browser war
  • Many PC's/workstations have mis-installed or mediocre multimedia subsystems
Focus Tango? e.g.Tango2 will only support fully Internet Explorer?
Package Tango with hardware (multimedia PC) as complete collaborative stations?
  • Recommended hardware lists .......

New Application Areas
  • Need feedback from users on what is useful -- we have this in education and training but not say in collaborative computing
Working on universal access with Wisconsin Trace Center -- shared event model allows customized interfaces with given curriculum rendered simultaneously in different ways on different clients
  • MicroTango client on your palm pilot
  • sonification of images on one client
  • low resolution on another
  • CAVE on a third
Developing research version built around XML and Jini with shared components in web pages supporting general model from
  • "clumsy current Tango model" to
  • "collaborative editing" of web documents sharing Web Consortium document fragments
