Tian'anmen Gate was originally called Chengtianmen Gate and the main entrance to the Imperial Palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

It was also the place where Imperial edicts were promulgated.

It was renamed Tian'anmen Gate in the 8th year of the reign of Shunzhi of the Qing Dynasty.
|
|
After this dynasty was overthrown, the Tian'anmen Square became the arena where patriotic and democratic rallies were held.

On October 1,1949, Chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed from the Tian'anmen rostrum the founding of the People's republic of China.
