Lyle Long is an exceptional Scientist who has my enthusiastic support for promotion. He is the type of innovative outward looking faculty member who is critical to building and evolving departments in this time of change. He has successfully created bridges to the computer science community and been leader in interdisciplinary research. Although it was not well documented in the resume I reviewed, I believe that he has made significant contributions in the integration of computers and web technology into education. His linkage of interdisciplinary research with education is as one says "right-on" and fits well for instance the current trends at the NSF. More precisely I repeat my remarks from my letter for his tenure review in 1993. I first met Long around 1989 when he was at Lockheed and I was at Caltech. I was highly impressed at that time by his papers, talk, and personal conversations. His work was, at the time, one of the very best applications of parallel processing to aerospace engineering. He clearly understood, very well, the key issues needed to exploit the emerging parallel architectures. I believe I was aware of all the major activities in computational fluid dynamics on parallel machines at the time, and my evaluation has some significance. I would rate Long's work of similar quality to the excellent research done at UTRC by Egolf and collaborators. I have not followed Long's recent work but the papers included seem to exhibit the same high quality. I can also comment on recent interactions with Lyle associated with an ill-fated collaboration with the Cornell Theory Center. This involved an unsuccessful proposal but I felt that PSU and Lyle as director of the HPCA center made a very powerful partner - PSU's linkage of HPC into research and education is a model for the country. It should be clear that Lyle has my full support and I am sure that he will be a key member of your department with a growing international recognition.
