I divide my comments into five areas: 1) Education 2) Research 3) Business 4) General 5) Trip Arrangements 1) Education First some tactical near term discussions. Has the CD-ROM had any impact? Should we promote it or modify it? What is the strategic plan in education? Is it centered on Internetics, which seems to me a nice focus. Then we need to how we can make progress. Note that there are differences between the U.S. and China in that "scientific computing"/HPCC is well covered in most good U.S. schools. However smaller U.S. schools and probably most of the world are more similar to China in that both Web and parallel computing/HPCC need comparable curricula development. It would be wise to note that computational science (as a curriculum) "failed" in the U.S. (it succeeded as a research area), which shows how hard it is to set up new curricula. So if we are doing Internetics, what is nature of collaboration? What program will be set up in what Universities and in what countries? Are we developing curricula plans or curricula material? Are they in Chinese? English? Or both? How many courses are we talking about? Perhaps an "International Certificate in Internetics in between 1 to 6 (counting courses we have in information and simulation tracks of CPS) Are we setting up or planning to set up an Internet based course, which we can offer perhaps throughout Asia? Do you/we still plan to write a book? 2) Research First how should the "structured SPMD Java" effort be arranged at NPAC. Is there a collaboration with China here. More generally what is combined NPAC-China research plan over either next 6-12 months or longer term. Does just involve parallel languages or also the Web? What is status of f2j -- is it a product? What is relative involvement of Peking, Harbin BUAA and other Chinese Universities? I expect to have a significant involvement with earthquake prediction by direct simulation in U.S. Thus I would like to meet with ACES representative in China. Would this have any useful spin-off with other Chinese Universities? 3) Business Our company Webwisdom.com will soon have interesting education and collaborative products. Also database supported digital video. The education products will be useable either internally to a school or university or externally. I will demonstrate these on my PC's. So now we can ask ? Are one or more of these products useful in China? ? If so, when (e.g. when will networks and computers be "good" enough) and where (what type of institution/application) will they be useful. ? Given market, what is marketing plan. For instance could exhibit at a conference. ? What is needed regionalization plan e.g. customization of interface to Asian use. Translation of documentation etc. ? What is business relationship? Perhaps one U.S company, one Chinese company and a joint venture between them. ? When would businesses be set up? ? When are products available? ? Are there difficult start-up funding problems? 4) General What high level contacts need to be established to enhance probability of success of any or all of 1) to 3)? What other trips need to be made and when? What is nature of relationships in business and university? In latter case, how do we collaborate? Groups in U.S. working with groups in China or also with exchange of personnel. If latter, what is length of exchange visit? Who are exchanged ? Students and/or researchers? China is naturally sensitive to "brain-drain" i.e. visitors to U.S. deciding to stay on. How do we address this? 5) Trip Arrangements I have exchanged a few emails with the BUAA Graduate Student Xiaohong Qiu who was kind enough to show me the Forbidden City on my last day of lectures. She is interested in the research program at Syracuse and would consider Syracuse for graduate school next year. I would consider her as a friend and will explain to her what graduate study is like at Syracuse. I actually think she would be wise to go to a better school unless she really wants to do research in areas that NPAC is now focusing in! She volunteered to meet me at airport and act as an interpreter and so you needn't worry about this chore. So it would be useful to arrange trips to Harbin and other places outside Peking so that her Professor (Wei Li) will let her have time off her work on scalable I/O to accompany me. On previous trips, China has graciously paid my expenses but this time as I am initiating trip, I will pay the expenses - either through NPAC for myself or personally for Xiaohong's airfare and Hotel room. I would like to choose a hotel with reasonable phone line so I can dial out to catch up on electronic mail! I wonder if it is best to buy air tickets in China (and I will reimburse whoever pays) or rather for you to choose times and I will purchase tickets through my travel agent? It might be that exchange rates etc. make a difference in cost here? If you need to coordinate with Xiaohong Qiu, I use email at BUAA qiu@cs.sebuaa.ac.cn This is shared with other student(s) and so I usually put in subject line who it is for!
