Foil 4 Optimization as used by Mother Nature and Physics

From Physical Optimization and Physical Computation CPSP713 Case studies in Computational Science -- Spring Semester 1996. by Geoffrey C. Fox

Nature is often solving optimization problems
  • On long term, evolution of species
  • On short term, interpretation of visual and other sensor information
Physics laws can usually be formulated as variational (optimization) problems
We can also - and indeed this should be the norm? - combine methods
  • e.g. nature uses a bunch of different approachs for optimizing human race:
  • Genetic algorithms evolve people over long time period
  • Expert systems for high level reasoning
  • Learning networks and ? for intermediate level vision
  • optimization networks for low level vision
