Education and Outreach We will support this propsal with an innovative education and outreach program that exploits the technology and experience developed by Fox while at Syracuse. This will be centered on the concept of a Collaborative Portal which has been developed in collaboration with the ET (Enabling Technology) and EOT (Education Outreach and Training) groups of the NCSA Alliance. A portal implies a systematic approach to web-based information systems with some key services such as security and user customization. A key part of research and education is the ability of researchers in a team or teachers and learners to collaboratively build and discuss the information captured in a given portal. This must be provided both interactively and asynchronously. As discussed in http://www.new-npac.org/users/fox/documents/pajavaapril00/, we have prototyped a three tier architecture for chemistry (http://www.osc.edu/~kenf/theGateway/ and http://www.npac.syr.edu/users/haupt/WebFlow/) We will adapt this approach for this proposal which will allow a powerful web based information resource for general access and this can then be applied for distance education and allow courses developed by participants to be shared with other universities with distance education.
