I have followed Karsten Schwan's work for the last 15 years since he was at Ohio State. All of his work has been closely aligned with application needs and is impressive in terms of the many interesting software systems that he has designed and built -- which systems are then used and tested using significant large scale applications. His research has focussed on interactive or real-time systems and I am most familiar with his work on computational steering Falcon and MOSS where he has constructed a sophisticated environment which has several important features that should be part of what would be called a "Computational Portal" or "Grid Computing Environment". I can highlight one of best uses of CORBA technology in scientific computing and the use of an agent framework to help the user in the real time decisions. This work illustrates his energy (I know this is a mammoth task from my work in this area) innovation and practical user oriented work. Karsten has been an active member of the editorial board for the journal "Concurrency: Practice and Experience". His reviews have been excellent. I believe Karsten is one of the very best computer science system researchers and he has demonstrated the international leadership required to be ACM fellow. He has my full support for this honor
