What is handheld Mail? The electronic mail application is comprised of two components: (1) the client software that runs under the Palm OS, and (2) a conduit which links e-mail data between the handheld and the user's E-Mail application Unlike many other handheld e-mail solutions, a separate e-mail server is not required. Instead, the handheld works with your E-Mail application to provide true inbox synchronization. The key advantage of the handheld Mail solution is that it addresses the "two mailbox" problem that many of our competitors still face. Who would typically use handheld Mail? There are two types of users who typically would benefit from using Mail: Corporate User - Interested in deploying multiple handhelds into an organization. This person may set up dedicated systems for Mail dial-in support and would like the product to be secure, easy to install and easy to maintain. In this regard, Mail must work with the existing corporate E-Mail system. Individual User - Someone who is interested in creating and viewing e-mails with the handheld. This user would use Microsoft Exchange or Outlook, Lotus cc:Mail, or Eudora as their E-Mail application. What's required to access e-mail? These two checklists will help you determine if you can use Mail: Will you use a handheld to access e-mail locally or remotely? Locally Must have a supported E-Mail application. The Palm Desktop must run on Windows 95 or 98 or NT. Accessing e-mail is as simple as a HotSync operation. Remotely Must have a supported E-Mail application. The Palm Desktop must run on Windows 95 or 98 or NT. Must satisfy all Network HotSync requirements. Which E-Mail applications are supported? Mail works with MAPI (Microsoft) and VIM (Lotus) E-Mail applications that run on Windows 95 or 98 or NT. In theory, any MAPI and VIM compliant packages should work fine with Mail. There may, however, be slight differences in vendor implementations of these standards and we have not thoroughly tested all clients which claim to support MAPI or VIM. Initial support for: Lotus cc:Mail 2.5, 6.0, 7.0 or higher (Any cc:Mail version should work if it employs cc:Mail Post Office version DB 6 or DB 8; this includes cc:Mail 2.2) Microsoft Exchange 4.0 or higher (or Windows Messaging) Eudora Pro 3.0.3 or higher Eudora Lite 3.0.3 or higher Not currently supported*: Lotus Notes 4.5 Novell GroupWise 5 America Online (AOL) CompuServe DEC All-in-One Eudora Pro 2.x Netscape Mail PROFS UNIX Pine *Note: Access to some of these E-Mail applications is supported if using Microsoft Exchange or Outlook as the client to the account. Also, see the website at http://www.palm.com for information on third-party software that may be added to support these E-Mail applications. Do you support POP3 (Internet Mail)? Direct connections from your handheld to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) will not avoid the two mailbox problem. For those users who really want to go directly from their handheld to their ISP, see www.palm.com for third-party solutions available. Can I use my handheld to access e-mail from my America Online account? This is not supported at this time. AOL's E-Mail application does not support MAPI or VIM so we currently have no mechanism to support full synchronization of e-mail. See www.palm.com for third-party solutions. Can I use my handheld to access e-mail from my CompuServe account? Yes. It is possible to access e-mail from your CompuServe account if Microsoft Exchange (or Outlook) is used as the client with the CompuServe gateway. The handheld does not work directly with CompuServe's E-Mail application. Does Mail work with Eudora? Yes. Eudora Pro 3.0.3, Eudora Lite 3.0.3, and later versions. Does Mail work with a Macintosh desktop? Unfortunately, not at this time. Mail works only with Windows 95, 98 and NT. The Macintosh currently does not support the conduit architecture required to seamlessly synchronize e-mail. We are working hard to make the necessary architectural changes to support this functionality in the future. See www.palm.com for updates on any recent developments. Can I access e-mail without an ISP? Yes, as long as you subscribe to an optional compatible e-mail service such as PilotMail Online. PilotMail Online is an e-mail service that allows you to send and receive e-mail without relying on your desktop PC, ISP, or any proprietary software. Please visit http://www.pilotmail.net/ for more information on PilotMail Online. (Note: PilotMail Online is in no way affiliated with Palm Computing,Inc. PilotMail Online is a separate company entirely responsible for supporting its own product.) Can I access e-mail without going through my PC desktop? Yes, if you subscribe to an optional compatible e-mail service such as Pilotmail Online (please see previous question) or utilize a third-party product like Hand Stamp.
