Contents ======== Overview Command-line and Wizard Versions Report Formats Accuracy of Reports System Requirements Important Internet Explorer Version Information Installing and Uninstalling Command-line Options Known Issues Only Microsoft File Systems Can Be Scanned Scanning Multi-boot Systems Downloading Updated Database Additional Year 2000 Information Disclaimer Overview ======== The Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer performs the following tasks: - Identifies installed software products on specified drives by scanning the drives for executable files - Compares the resulting list of products to the products listed in a compliance database - Generates a report of the compliance levels of the products it discovered, based on the information in the compliance database A Microsoft products compliance database is supplied with the Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer. Command-line and Wizard Versions -------------------------------- Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer includes two different executable files: a command-line version (Y2kscn32.exe) and a wizard (Y2kscan.exe). You can download the latest version of the compliance database while using the wizard version of the program. When you use the command-line version, the database must already be accessible on the local network. The command-line version of the program can generate an inventory list of all discovered programs, including programs that are not included in the compliance database. Report Formats -------------- You can choose any of the following formats for the report: Text (.txt) Read with any text editor HTML (.htm) Read with any Web browser Comma-separated value (.csv) Import into spreadsheets and tables Management Information Format (.mif) Import into Systems Management Server 2.0 database Accuracy of Reports ------------------- The Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer does not test for compliance. It only identifies programs by the presence of their executable files, looks up the compliance level for those programs in a local copy of the Microsoft products compliance database, and then generates a report from this information. The quality of reports generated by the Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer is affected by the following factors: The completeness of the database -------------------------------- The database supplied with the Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer lists known year 2000 compliance levels for Microsoft products only. This information is subject to change, because additional information is gathered by continued testing. Therefore, a copy of this database is frequently updated and placed on Microsoft's Web site, at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/year2k/y2kdbEN.txt. For other information about Microsoft products and the year 2000, check the Microsoft website at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/year2k. The accuracy of the database ---------------------------- While product testing continues, the information in the supplied database is subject to change. For the most current information about Microsoft products, run the Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer using a compliance database that has been updated with information from "http://www.microsoft.com/technet/year2000". The accuracy of the scan ------------------------ Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer determines which products are installed on your computer by searching for executable files (*.exe). In most cases, this produces an accurate list of installed software products. However, if a user has changed the name of a product's executable file, that product will not be correctly identified. For example, if Play.exe has been renamed Productivity.exe, the Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer would not discover the program Play. Play, and its compliance level, would not appear in the report even if Play were listed in the compliance database. Microsoft provides the compliance database that accompanies the Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer to help customers plan their computers' transition to the year 2000 and for no other purpose. The information provided in the compliance database is limited by the testing that has been done on these products. As more testing is done, more information is added to the database, and the updated database is posted to http://www.microsoft.com/technet/year2k. For best results, download the most recent version of the database before you run the Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer. Command-line Options ==================== The command-line version of the Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer runs in silent mode. Known Issues ============ Only Microsoft File Systems Can Be Scanned ------------------------------------------ The Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer can accurately scan files in directories that use a Microsoft file system (FAT or NTFS). The program uses file size to help identify programs, and cannot account for differences in file size that might occur when other file systems are used. Scanning Multi-Boot Systems --------------------------- The Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer can accurately detect the compliance level of only those products installed under the currently running operating system. If it detects more than one operating system installed on the computer, it will display a warning in the report and list the operating systems that it found. Make sure you run the analyzer under each operating system. Downloading Updated Database ---------------------------- When you run the wizard version of the Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer, you can choose to download a new version of the compliance database file from a Web site. By default the new file will be downloaded to the directory where the Microsoft Year 2000 Product Analyzer program files are located; you can specify a different destination if you want to. The downloaded compliance database file will replace any existing file with the same file name in that directory, and the file will be used during subsequent scans of the same computer. To download a new database, you must have Wininet.dll installed on your computer. This file is installed on Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 95 when you install Internet Explorer. The file is automatically installed on Windows 98 or Windows 2000. If you do not have this DLL, then the Update Database option in the wizard is disabled.
