I have known Mark Baker since 1995 when he joined me at my research center in high performance computing (NPAC) at Syracuse University. After he returned to Portsmouth I have continued to interact with him in several different projects including clustered computing, benchmarking and the use of Java in high performance computing. It is clear from his resume that Mark is extremely active in these important areas and indeed his work is growing in recognition and importance. Currently we are looking at the use of Jini to support distributed computing -- an area which I think is very important As well as important research work, he has performed much service to the community. This is illustrated by his leadership of the highly regarded PEMCS benchmarking effort and his tireless work for the journal Concurrency (and Computation):Practice and Experience which I edit. He has edited 5 different special issues -- all on important topics. Although I can not judge it so directly, he is also very active in TFCC -- the IEEE task force on clustered computing. Mark is an excellent teacher -- as I judge from the tutorials he has given -- including one on "Metacomputing: The Informal Supercomputer" which were part of activities I led. Mark has ny unreserved recommendation for a Readership position at Portsmouth. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with him.
