I write to resign my faculty positions in the Department of Physics and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science effective June 30, 2002. In addition, I request an unpaid administrative leave of absence beginning on April 8, 2000 (corresponding to the first paid "work" day of the first semimonthly pay period in April) and extending through the effective date of my resignation. (I propose that I will draw no salary from the University's central "Education and General" budget following a final, full paycheck at the end of March 2000.) During the administrative leave that I request, I will fulfill my teaching responsibilities at SU through the completion of the current semester. The timing of my resignation and the leave that I request are intended to be responsive to the needs of SU students and sponsors during my transition to a faculty position at Florida State University. In particular, I would like to continue to serve as the advisor for several Ph.D. students who wish to complete their degrees from SU under my direction. In addition, I propose to continue serve as Principal Investigator on several of my external grants and contracts, which will remain at Syracuse through their current expiration dates (May through September 2000). I am also willing to continue to set "computational science exams" for the Ph.D. program in computer and information science, if this is of interest to the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. In recognition of my continuing relationship and responsibilities at SU, I request that I retain my current office in the Center for Science and Technology through July 31, 2000. I thank you for the opportunities given to me at Syracuse. I look forward to continuing interactions with several Syracuse colleagues and friends in the years ahead.
