1 S/MIME is a new standard for encrypted and digitally signed electronic mail. Developed by RSA, S/MIME enables users of Web messaging clients such as Netscape Messenger to send encrypted messages and authenticate received messages.
2 S/MIME delivers message encryption and authentication with the flexibility, interoperability, and cost-effectiveness of Web-based messaging.
3 S/MIME offers users the following basic features:
  • Encryption for message privacy
  • Sender authentication with digital signatures
  • Tamper detection
  • Interoperability with other S/MIME-compliant software
  • Seamless integration into Netscape Messenger
  • Cross-platform messaging
