Foil 15 Some Distributed Components

From JavaBeans and Visual HPCC omponentWare Study of DoE2000 Initiative -- July 1997. by Wojtek Furmanski, Geoffrey Fox

1 A natural next step in the Object Web evolution will be reusable component based support for distributed objects and the associated BeanBoxes for authoring.
2 This area is now actively explored by the software industry as a promising framework for the Intranet Enterprise Computing. Some prominent efforts include:
  • Crossware by Netscape - which aims to integrate BeanConnect with the ORB support built into all Netscape products
  • Enterprise JavaBeans - a new JavaSoft initiative towards server-side support for JavaBeans
  • CORBA Beans - a pending position paper by IBM, Oracle, Netscape and Sunsoft, submitted to OMG and urging for RFPs in the area of CORBA support for Beans based componentware.
3 An alternative to the emergent CORBA/Beans based distributed componentware is Microsoft DCOM which is a distributed version of OLE/ActiveX. DCOM is currently a few years behind CORBA and hence it will likely evolve by assimilating the CORBA/Beans concepts.
