TCP (stream --> segment --> datagram --> frame)
  • reliable, connection-oriented, byte-stream protocol
UDP (message--> packet --> datagram --> frame)
  • unreliable, connection-less datagram protocol
IP - connection-less protocol: when the datagrams are sent, the network does not know that there is any connection between them
