As NPAC only started 7 months ago and much work generic, hard to estimate impact on users numerically
Web log analysis system based on Java GUI to Oracle or Illustra database developed and ready for deployment
Deployment of collaboration tools
  • Derek trained in Tango Dec'97
  • Tango functionality enhancements, improved architecture and major effort to remove bugs (mainly "Netscape features")
  • Tango 1.01 released July 98
  • Tango server to be deployed on site in August 98 as we develop "beta site" support team in NPAC.

ARL plans part of (proposed) PET-wide C & T implementation plan derived from PET Exec. Committee Vision document which is consistent with NSF PACI, NSF Education Research(CILT), DoD(ADL) and Industry (Microsoft, Centra, Placeware, Docent)
Structure of InfoComm Year 3-5 Activities
  • Year 3 prototype deploy, Year 4 evaluate and extend, year 5 production with adjustments for rapidly changing technologies
G1) Monitor ongoing progress in InfoComm technologies and transfer as appropriate to DoD Modernization community through training and deployment activities
  • e.g. Microsoft ChromeEffects and "battle" with Java3D (VRML is doomed?)

G2) Deployment in Staged Fashion of basic RESEARCH and MANAGEMENT collaboratory with gradual broadening of user community and addition of advanced features. This would be supported by training and evaluation functions.
  • Use Tango for synchronous and a selection of Asynchronous tools including databases and Lotus Notes
G3) Produce an evaluation and associated training to allow use of multimedia (audio/video over foils) enhancements to training material. Phase in use of databases as back-end support
  • RealPlayer, NCSA Webcasting
G4) Deployment of proven Tango education and training capabilities and enhancement with especially addition of integrating backend database support. (NPAC)
G5) Evaluate and deploy authoring techniques for both training and other web pages. (NCSA)
