Foil 61 Summary of Application Trends

From Master Foilset for CPS615 Introduction -- Material from Culler and Koelbel Computational Science for Simulations -- Fall Semester 1998. by Geoffrey C. Fox, Nancy McCracken

1 Transition to parallel computing has occurred for scientific and engineering computing but this is 1-2% of computer market
2 In rapid progress in commercial computing
  • Database and transactions as well as financial modeling/oil reservoir simulation
  • Web servers including multi-media and search growing importance
  • Typically functional or pleasingly parallel
  • Usually smaller-scale, but large-scale systems also used
3 Desktop also uses multithreaded programs, which are a lot like parallel programs (again functional not data parallel)
4 Demand for improving throughput on sequential workloads
  • Greatest use of small-scale multiprocessors
5 Solid application demand exists and will increase
