Foil 75 Three Systems Compared (2)

From Designing and Building Parallel Programs 2: openMP Shared Memory Programming Language DoD Modernization Tutorial -- 1995-1998. by Ian Foster, Gina Goff, Ehtesham Hayder, Chuck Koelbel(Some foils prepared by Kuck & Associates, Inc.)

OpenMP
  • Good abstraction: fork-join
  • System excellent for incremental parallelization on shared memory
    • No implementations yet on distributed memory
  • Well-suited for any parallel application if locality is not an issue
Can we combine paradigms?
  • Yes, although it's still research
