1 Becoming a more common means of increasing the throughput of user applications in the US and Europe.
2 A significant number of packages exist - almost all originate from research projects, many have now been taken-up/adopted by commercial vendors.
3 Importance can be seen by both the commercial take-up and also by the widespread installation of this software at most of the major computing facilities around the world.
