Foil 52 SLIP - Serial Line Internet Protocol

From Introduction to Network Protocols Lectures at Xi'an Jaotong University -- Sept 1998. by Roman Markowski

1 Two schemes have been adopted by the Internet community to provide links over serial point-to-point lines into dial-up routers: SLIP and PPP
2 SLIP supports the transmission of IP datagrams encapsulated within SLIP frames;
3 SLIP operates over point-to-point connection; simpler than PPP
4 suitable for stationary systems that only transmit IP;
5 supports asynchronous and synchronous transfers over dedicated or dialup lines;
6 datagram size: 1006 bytes; no error detection/correction; compression is not supported
