The DoD required the HPCMP to cut ~$4.5M from the $18M PET program (MOS & HPTi) because of the escalating cost of the war on terrorism. There was no malice on the part of the HPCMO or the Gang of Five. Like MOS, they had no choice but to find places to cut and to pass on the unfortunate news to the team. The government made the cut in the following order: Capturing unspent funds (including all management reserve) Freezing hiring, where no offer has been made, until 30 Sep 2002 Freezing equipment purchases not yet approved until 30 Sep 2002 Minimizing travel Recovering ~$250K from FY 02 MOS PET projects (5% of the total cut) One MOS PET project, a CSM project from Minnesota, was cancelled completely. Reductions were made in several other MOS projects. In contrast, the government issued a STOP WORK order for ALL HPTi projects. We have notified the PIs whose FY 02 projects the government asked to reduce through level of effort and/or contract funding. If you have not received such a notice you can breathe easier. All other projects, and the core effort as well, have passed through the FY 02 budget cut window. We do not anticipate any further cuts in FY 02. However, in the event we receive notice of any additional reductions we will immediately notify those concerned. zak | * * * * * * OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO | * * * * * :::::::::::::::::::::::: | * * * * * * OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO | * * * * * :::::::::::::::::::::::: | * * * * * * OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO | * * * * * :::::::::::::::::::::::: | * * * * * * OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO | * * * * * :::::::::::::::::::::::: | * * * * * * OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO |::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: |OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO |::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: |OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO G.M. There was no malice on the part of the HPCMO or the Gang of Five. Like MOS, they had no choice but to find places to cut and to pass on the unfortunate news to the team.

The government made the cut in the following order:
Capturing unspent funds (including all management reserve)
Freezing hiring, where no offer has been made, until 30 Sep 2002
Freezing equipment purchases not yet approved until 30 Sep 2002
        Minimizing travel
Recovering ~$250K from FY 02 MOS PET projects (5% of the total cut)

One MOS PET project, a CSM project from Minnesota, was cancelled completely.
