| All the dryers we tested performed well and
included a moisture sensor, which we consider a plus. The GE
DPSE592EA, $605, excelled in our tests, but GE has been among the
more repair-prone brands. The Maytag MDE7500A, $780, did nearly as
well, and Maytag has a better brand-repair record. Two
less-expensive top performers, the Kenmore 6283, $370, and Whirlpool
LEQ8858J, $350, are both CR Best Buys. The Whirlpool has been
discontinued, but is still available in some stores. Both of these
machines became relatively hot in one of our tests, however--a
concern if your laundry typically includes lots of delicates.
The first option is a laundry center, which combines a full-sized
washer and dryer in one unit. All those we've tested are full-sized
machines. A relatively low-priced option is the Kenmore (Sears)
9081[2], $950.
Compact stackable units are the smallest option: they're
typically about 5-1/2 feet tall, compared with more than 6 feet for
the other options. An inexpensive compact pair is the GE Spacemaker
WSLS1100A washer, $530, and DSKS433EB dryer, $380. Both performed
well in our tests and are relatively quiet.
The dryers listed in the chart below use electric heat, but
almost all have a gas-burning sibling listed as a similar model on
their model page, which you can reach by clicking on the model's
name.
Whichever dryer you buy, vent it using rigid or flexible metal
ducting. Avoid plastic or flexible foil, which can create a fire
hazard by trapping flammable lint inside.
