| Almost any gas range does a fine job. Which
model you choose depends mostly on the look and performance you
want, and on what you want to spend.
You can expect superb performance overall from the six
top-scoring gas ranges. The GE JGB910WEC[WW], $1,249, and GE
JGB920WEC[WW], $1,350, offer the largest ovens, but the basic $500
Hotpoint RGB745BEA[WH], A CR Best Buy, performed similarly and costs
far less.
Pro-style ranges typically feature lots of stainless steel, heavy
grates, beefy cooktop controls, and very high-powered cooktop
burners. We tested four pro-style ranges: the Viking VGSC3064B[SS],
DCS RGA-304[SS], Dacor PGR30[S], and KitchenAid KDRP407H[SS]. The
dual-fuel KitchenAid, $3,640, is the obvious choice, though we lack
reliability data on this type of range. Still, it didn't stand out
significantly from less-pricey high-scoring ranges, though its
"industrial" look is quite different from their appearance.
