All of the machines we tested should wash a
large load capably. Most are also relatively quiet and reasonably
frugal with water. But there are several standouts among both
front-loaders and top-loaders.
For washing ability, capacity, noise, energy and water
efficiency, front-loaders generally trump top loaders. However, they
can be more expensive to buy, and most also require the use of a
special, low-sudsing detergent that can cost more per load than
top-loader detergent. Among front-loaders, the Kenmore 4104, $700,
is our choice for performance and efficiency. It's expensive
compared with many top-loading washers, but the energy and water it
saves could pay for its added cost over its lifetime. Three other
front-loading washers--the GE Profile WPXH214A and similar
Frigidaires--are also reasonably priced. All three share a similar
design but have different controls. Among top-loaders, the Kenmore
Calypso 2206 and similar Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K--each
$1,250--excel in performance and efficiency. But the Maytag
PAV2300A, $370--A CR Best Buy--washes clothes just as well, is
reasonably efficient, and costs far less.
If space is at a premium, you may want to stack a full-sized
front-loading washer below a dryer with controls in front; the Key
Features listing for each washer (which you reach by clicking on the
model name in the chart) details which models can be stacked in this
way. But there are two other space-saving options, involving types
of machine that aren't included in the ratings below but which we've
recently tested.
The first option is a laundry center, which combines a full-sized
washer and dryer in one unit. All those we've tested are full-sized
machines. A relatively low-priced option is the Kenmore (Sears)
9081[2], $950.
Compact stackable units are the smallest option; they're
typically about 5-1/2 feet tall, compared with more than 6 feet for
the other options. An inexpensive compact pair is the GE Spacemaker
WSLS1100A washer, $530, and DSKS433EB dryer, $380. Both performed
well in our tests and are relatively quiet.
