This page documents timings of the TANGO downloading process.

The measurements have been taken on a vanilla Gateway 2000 120 MHz Pentium machine running Windows NT 4.0 and connected to Internet via 2-channel ISDN line and via a modem. The measured average download times were as follows:

14.4 kpbs modem	~4-5 min	~1 min
28.8 kpbs modem	2 min 40 sec	~30 sec
64 kpbs ISDN line	1 min 10 sec	12 sec
128 kpbs ISDN line	48 sec	10 sec

The above measurements are documented by a number of snapshots from the Windows Performance Monitor:

TANGO first load on Netscape 4. The graph X scale covers 100 secs. Every horizontal grid cell is 4 secs long. The first peak and subsequent plateou corresponds to Netscape starting Java VM. The next 48 seconds show TANGO loading process. The last spike is due to TANGO login process.

TANGO 2nd load on Netscape 4. System loads in less than 10 seconds, entirely from cache.

TANGO 3rd load on Netscape 4, followed by download of the layered whiteboard applet.

For comparison. the loading process of the plain HTML pages and several large images. Please, note that Java loading process is unable to fully utilize available bandwidth due to the CPU-intensive byte checking and run-time processes.
