NETSCAPE COLLABRA SERVER 3.0 BETA

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (January 13, 1996) -- Netscape Communications Corporation is releasing the beta version of Netscape Collabra Server 3.0, a high-performa nce, open discussion server with integrated security features that help make co llaboration and knowledge-sharing among teams of people on the Internet and Int ranet easy, effective and productive. Based on the Collabra Share groupware te chnology acquired by Netscape last year, Netscape Collabra Server is newly arch itected for the Internet using the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) standa rd. It combines the richness of the Web with the award-winning features of Col labra Share and the cross-platform performance and flexibility of the Netscape SuiteSpot server line for open email, publishing and groupware on Intranets.

Netscape Collabra Server makes it easy for companies to establish a collaborati ve environment for seamless information-sharing. The software provides a power ful mechanism for organizing discussions and distilling knowledge in the enterp rise. Netscape Collabra Server lets users publish and access information with the richness of the Web through the Netscape Collabra component of the new Nets cape Communicator client software, now available in a beta version. Content st ored in Netscape Collabra Server can also be replicated outside the organizatio n for collaboration with business partners and customers.

NETSCAPE COLLABRA SERVER 3.0 FEATURES INCLUDE:

  • Rich-Text Discussions. Netscape Collabra Server makes it easy to create an d manage discussion groups with the richness of the Web. It combines the power of NNTP discussions with an HTML composition tool so employees can use formatt ed text, sounds, graphics and hyperlinks to collaborate inside and outside the firewall.

  • Proven Scalability. Netscape Collabra Server is based on software that sca les easily from the Intranet to Internet Usenet proportions and can handle more than 25,000 discussion groups with total message volumes of 4 to 5 gigabytes.

  • Encrypted Communications. Netscape Collabra Server provides security feat ures that are unmatched by competitors to help protect the privacy of communica tions. It is the only discussions server that supports the combination of X.50 9 digital certificates for authentication between servers and clients, username /password security and domain-based security. In addition, support for the Sec ure Sockets Layer (SSL) 3.0 protocol provides strong encryption of discussion m essages. Powerful access control features also provide MIS professionals a hig h degree of access control over discussion groups.

  • Virtual Discussion Groups. Netscape Collabra Server enables users to crea te custom views of pertinent information by tracking discussion threads across multiple discussion groups. These virtual discussion groups are automatically populated with relevant new messages and can be controlled exactly the same way as real discussion groups.

  • Structured Discussions. Netscape Collabra Server organizes threaded discu ssions into hierarchical discussions and categories within discussions. The so ftware presents discussions within each forum and category in graphical views a nd helps simplify Usenet discussions for nontechnical readers.

  • Powerful Search Tools. Netscape Collabra Server allows users to automatic ally monitor discussion groups for specific content. Powerful search and notif ication tools in the software help eliminate the tedious process of sifting tho ugh unnecessary discussions to find useful information.

  • Delegated Administration. Netscape Collabra Server empowers end users by allowing them to create, manage and moderate discussion groups. The software h elps system administrators significantly decrease management overhead by delega ting the administrative duties to end users.

  • NNTP-Based Replication. Support for the NNTP standard allows content stor ed in Netscape Collabra Server to be replicated to other NNTP servers. This en ables network administrators to selectively replicate content at the forum leve l, specify redundant links for more reliable replication, and define replicatio n topology to suitably manage network traffic. The software also helps minimiz e the transfer of data through smart replication.

  • LDAP Directory Integration. Netscape Collabra Server integrates with the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) support in the Netscape SuiteSpot server line. Netscape Collabra Server manages user data and user access throug h a standard LDAP directory service, allowing a single point of user management across the servers on an Intranet. This directory integration enables a singl e user logon to LDAP-enabled Intranet services.

The beta versions of Netscape Collabra Server and Netscape Communicator are now available for download on the Netscape Internet site. Netscape Collabra Serve r is expected to be available for both Window NT and UNIX operating environment s by the first quarter of 1997.
