Eleanor and Walter, As you know, Geoffrey Fox is moving to Florida State University. Some members of NPAC, mostly graduate students, will move to FSU as well. Geoffrey's research program at FSU will focus on web-based portals for scientific computing and education (the evolution of the current "Gateway" project) and on distance education (Geoffrey will be Chief Scientist for the University's large distance education deployment project, as well as continuing and expanding research in this area in his own group). Others in NPAC have chosen other paths. The "Tango Group" will stay in Syracuse and try to build the NPAC spoin-off company WebWisdom.com, which has commercial rights to Tango, LecCorder and related technologies. At this point in time, it also looks like Wojtek Furmanski will stay at Syracuse and continue his research program. As mentioned above, we expect activity at FSU in distance education to be quite vigorous and interesting, taking an approach which generalizes the Syracuse work and adds new developments such as those in commercial education/training systems and new Internet technologies. We will continue to work with Jackson State and other (HBCU) PET partners but so far the interest originally expressed by NAVO's partner institutions in our distance education work has not extended to actual participation. Given this situation we have decided not to submit a Year 5 proposal in this area at the present time. Of course if you are particularly interested in continuing to support work in distance education/training, we would be happy to discuss it with you and develop a proposal. Also, if you are interested in continued technical support for Tango Interactive at NAVO, I will ask WebWisdom.com to supply a quote for such services. The other work we're doing for you at the moment is in the area of metacomputing/distributed simulation, which is lead by Wojtek Furmanski. Though his plans are not yet firm, he has expressed an interest in staying at Syracuse and continuing his work with NAVO. Because of the delays in the progress of the current project, it is difficult to make a detailed follow-on proposal at this time, but I enclose our best attempt. I hope you will consider it open for discussion and revision as the current project proceeds, and as Wojtek's plans for the future firm up. Please let me know if you have any questions. David
