Tips for NPAC Visitors to ARL MSRC
Army Research Laboratory
Aberdeen Proving Ground
Aberdeen, MD
Formalities
All visits to ARL must be arranged in advance through David Bernholdt (bernhold@npac.syr.edu).
US citizens and permanent residents (green card holders) can get in easily
on short notice. I don't have much experience with trying to get
foreign nationals on site.
Getting There, Part 1 ... Air
The most convenient airport is Baltimore-Washington International (airport
code BWI), about 40 miles away
from Aberdeen (you will need a rental car).
US Air has direct flights to/from Syracuse four time per day.
Flights are on small turboprop aircraft, but they only take about an hour.
Taking the first flight out of Syracuse (about 6am), it is possible to
get into Aberdeen by around ?? (not sure how Baltimore traffic may
effect this). Primary returning flights leave at 4pm (appropriate
for a half-day meeting) and 9pm.
Getting There, Part 2 ... Car
Airport to Aberdeen
From the airport, take I-195 to I-95 North (towards Philadephia).
You will pass through Baltimore and go through the Ft. McHenry Tunnel (toll).
Take Aberdeen Exit 85 onto Route 22.
So far, I have not found a gas station conveniently close to the airport
(and have wasted a lot of time trying). I recommend taking the "Fuel
Service Option" with your rental car.
It is advisable to plan about 1 hour non-rush hour travel time
from Aberdeen to the airport if you are planning to catch a flight.
To ARL
Continue on Route 22 East to the Aberdeen Proving Ground Harford Gate.
Once through the APG entrance gate you are on Harford Blvd. Bear right
at the third traffic light (two lanes bear right, a field of old artillery
pieces is on your right). Continue to the next traffic light and turn left
onto Aberdeen Blvd. After four intersections, Aberdeen Blvd bears left
about 45 degrees, while a lesser road continues straight. Bear left on
the boulevard and do not take the left turn which appears almost immediately.
Continue on past a road forking in on the right to an intersection, and
take a right. The modern rectangular building on your right is Test and
Evaluation Command Headquarters. The old white frame building on your left
is APG Support Activity Headquarters. Just barely past it on your left
is the entrance to a large parking lot. Make a left turn into that entrance,
and an immediate right into the parking lot. The MSRC is in the large red
brick building across the parking lot. Park, enter the brick
building, tell the guard you are going to Visitor Control, go up one flight
of stairs thereto, call your POC, and complete the form to obtain a temporary
security badge.
To HEAT Center
Take Interstate 95 to Exit 85, Churchville/Aberdeen (Rt. 22) West. The
HEAT Center is located directly behind the Park 'n Ride which is located
at exit 85.
Staying There
The main hotel used for PET-related meetings is the Sheraton Four
Points, just off I-95 Ext 85. The Business Office will have contact
info. There are a couple of other hotels closeby in case the Sheraton
is full.
