JDK Tool Enhancements

Some of the JDK tools have been modified and improved in this release. Not all changes to tools are mentioned on this page -- this release also contains specialized tools, such as IDL tools, which you will find listed with the feature.

javac -O Option - The -O option for javac has a different meaning, and may have different performance effects on generated code, than earlier compilers. Additionally, -O no longer implicitly turns on -depend, so you will need to add -depend to the command line where desired. See javac (Solaris) and javac (Windows).
javap and java - In JDK 1.1, "javap -verify" performed a partial verification of the class file. This option was misleading because it did not perform many portions of a full verification. The option has been removed in 1.2; instead, use "java -Xverify". See java (Solaris) and java (Windows).
java Non-Standard Options - The java interpreter now has standard and non-standard sets of command-line options. Non-standard options begin with -X, such as -Xdebug. The standard set is supported in JDK 1.2 and will also be supported in future versions of the VM. The non-standard options are not guaranteed to be supported in upcoming VMs produced by JavaSoft. Security tools - The javakey tool has been replaced with the keytool, jarsigner and policytool tools. See the JDK 1.2 security documentation for descriptions of the new tools.

JavaSoft
