Foil 38 Web Based MetaComputing

From Master Presentation on Java for Simulation and Education Penn State Jan 13,Wright State Jan 27,SIAM March 16 1997 -- January 1997. by Geoffrey C. Fox

1 Can use network of Web Clients and/or Web Servers
2 Not clear if distinction (in capability) between web server and client will remain
3 Web Client Models Include SuperWeb from UCSB and hotwired article "Suck your Mips".
4 More powerful but less pervasive is a pure Web Server model as in NPAC WebFlow
5 Can either use in controlled (IntraNets or run a server on every node of your MPP) or uncontrolled (the whole world wide web) fashion
  • Uncontrolled mode has interesting economic implications and is controversial in security, network performance area
6 Note total compute power in all Web "clients" is about 1000 times that in all Central Supercomputers
