Foil 14 Review Article versus Database Search?

From Master Set of Foils on Relevant Web Technologies for NHSE and Education NHSE Review Rice University -- Houston -- Dec 4, 1996. by Geoffrey C. Fox

1 There are several well understood approaches to find out information about a given subject
  • Ask an expert (This becomes Collaborative Mentor model using Java Servers on the web)
  • Read a review article -- this highly refined high value information which is inevitably somewhat out of date
  • Full Web Search withsome sort of keywords --this is poorly refined with low "hit rate" but very up to date
  • Subscribe to mailing lists
  • Limited Web Search of restricted domain
2 NHSE is using and linking all these approaches to achieve both high value and timeliness.
  • Most effective approach is unclear and important in many areas (outside NHSE) but tradeoff in approaches will be different in different areas.
