  • contains one or more elements
  • there is precisely one element (the root) for which neither the start nor the end tag is inside any other element
  • all other tags nest within each other correctly
Valid document: document complies with DTD
  • content model validity: order and nesting
  • data type validity: correct type and other constraints satisfaction e.g. value range
