Subject: Roadmapification of EOT Learning Technogies/Graduate Education Resent-Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 13:11:43 -0400 Resent-From: Geoffrey Fox Resent-To: p_gcf@boss.npac.syr.edu Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 15:33:46 -0400 From: Geoffrey Fox To: Scott Lathrop CC: rr@bu.edu, John Melchi So I need to resend you EOT graduate and learning technology master plans with among other things clear linkage to roadmaps. So I see this as a good opportunity to bring some helpful coordination in both areas. The central idea (as I mentioned before) should probably be: Development of a Portal to EOT This must be done in concert with other Alliance teams but natural organization within EOT seems to be: a) Learning Technologies leads architecture and identification of EOT specific services within distributed object model of general roadmap b) Graduate effort naturally develops portal technology training as delivery of Internetics courses and c) Graduate Undergraduate K-12 New Communities provide requirements and commit to implementing portals This requires actions from projects like Riverweb as well as base activities d) Universal Access group provide technical input for WHOLE Alliance roadmap on how to make all portals universally accessible Particular topics within EOT portal include 1) Systematic use of IMS metadata 2) Collaboration as seen in use of Tango in EOT 3) XML Ontology for things like glossaries, hierarchical instructional material, Mathematics (extending MathML to support K-12 Math if necessary, bullying Tango group to make Whiteboard and Chatroom accept MathML text so we can support scientific collaboration and learning) 4) Web-linked databases for EOT projects in "same style" as Alliance decides 5) Universal Access using appropriate stylesheets 6) EOT Specific servers as developed by NCSA, NPAC, WebCT etc. supporting registration (PAPI in IMS lingo), classroom analogies etc. 7) ChemViz Biology workbench Riverweb etc. Now I can put this in but it needs your buy in as a lot of impact on other EOT teams I also need your help in setting up appropriate process analogous to May 12-13 meeting for ET and AT types. EOT portals lie roughly half way between "Science Portals as in Gannon et al. roadmap" and "IntranetNT" or whatever one calls the follow on to Lotus Notes Intranet which is I believe meant to use XML and JDBC based databases .....
