Computing and Education Portals The success of Enterprise Information and Community Portals have inspired great interest in portals in other areas. Java and XML are important parts of portal technology. Building specialized portals such as those for computing and education, requires identifying special requirements and seeing how they fit into the more general academic and commerecial infrastructure which is just emerging. We describe standards activities such as the Grid Forum http://www.gridforum.org and the less well established http://www.computingportals.org Computational Science portals promise much more productive programming environments and we give several examples including mesh generation and Earth Science. We describe collaborative portals based on federated event services and the linkage of event based learning and collaboration.
