Subject: Recommendation for Saleh Elmohamed Resent-Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2000 10:59:36 -0500 Resent-From: Geoffrey Fox Resent-To: p_gcf@npac.syr.edu Date: Fri, 09 Jul 1999 12:42:18 -0400 From: Geoffrey Fox To: hellers@us.ibm.com CC: gcf@npac.syr.edu Saleh has worked quite closely with me as a reserch student and as a grader/support student for our internet and conventional classes. I took a little bit of time to reply as I needed to investiage your (correct) comment that he hadn't published much So you will see he does have one published, one submitted and a bunch of embryonic papers This illustrates Saleh's strength's and I guess his weakness. Namely Saleh is broadly knowledgeable as you can see from diversity of his research and professional interests. However he has in the past at least shown some lack of "killer instinct" to bring activities to an expeditious completion. His research work is of highest quality and I believe that his results on hybrid "phsical optimization" methods for scheduling are innovative and important. This illustrates his strengths as he was able to combine diverse ideas ( simulated annealing, neural nets, expert systems) and implement a large scale problem (scheduling Syracuse classes) He is also an excellent resource when you need to collect information about a new area Saleh is a serious hard working scientists who communicates well. I am happy to recommend him very highly.
