INSTITUTION NAME: Florida State University WORK PACKAGE TITLE: IC PROJECT TITLE: I/C Training Activities POC NAME: Geoffrey C. Fox EMAIL: gcf@cs.fsu.edu PHONE: 850 644 4587 FAX: 850 644 0098 CTA or PEI: I/C PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project bundles together our plans to provide training for the ARL PET program. Additional events may be offered, but the following have been discussed with the Training staff and PET management. Seminar: "Use of and Value of Commercial Learning Systems" This seminar will discuss a number of popular commercial tools for network-based learning, such as LearningSpace, Blackboard, WebCT, and tools from RealNetworks, based on our planned assessment of them as part of the I/C Core effort. This seminar will be aimed at everyone in the HPCMP community who has a need for distance learning tools, including: o PET Training staff o HPCMP academic affiliates interested in developing distance learning courses to help educate current and future DoD Scientists and Engineers o DoD Scientist and Engineers who may wish to develop training materials, for example in conjunction with particular packages or techniques used in their work Tutorial: "Handheld Digital Devices in HPC Computing Environments" The low cost and increasing performance of handheld devices, including personal digital assistants (PDAs) and even cell phones and two-way pagers, has made them increasingly interesting tools in the world of business. They are equally interesting, though to date less used, in the context of Science and Engineering research, for example in the DoD. Last year, we began tracking and analyzing these technologies for the ERDC MSRC PET program under a "Handheld Supercomputing" initiative. This tutorial will leverage that experience to present the capabilities, tools, and techniques that are available today to link handheld devices to HPC and S&E activities. The target audience will include anyone interested in the possibilities for use of these devices. Workshop: "Gateway PSE Developers Workshop" Gateway is a prototype environment for seamless metacomputing in a web-based environment, which is being developed by FSU and the Ohio Supercomputer Center under the sponsorship of the ARL and ASC PET programs. Gateway is intended to provide software developers and environment in which it is easy to create web-based front-ends to a suite of software tools targeted to a particular CTA or type of problem (a problem solving environment, PSE). Initial versions of Gateway are being deployed in testbeds at ASC and ARL with a CCM PSE, and soon the system will be ready to accomodate more general PSE development. This workshop will be aimed at PET CTA staff and HPCMP users with an interest in developing or extending PSEs for the Gateway system, introducing them to the Gateway system and the procedures for creating a PSE. PROJECT OBJECTIVES: This effort provides training and seminars for HPCMP users. DELIVERABLES: 1) One seminar, as described above or as jointly agreed by future discussions with ARL PET management. 2) One tutorial, as described above or as jointly agreed by future discussions with ARL PET management. 3) One workshop, as described above or as jointly agreed by future discussions with ARL PET management. CUSTOMERS/END USERS: HPCMP users and staff BENEFIT TO THE WARFIGHTER: These activities give DoD Scientist and Engineers access to seminars and training events in areas relevant to the HPCMP, helping them to be aware of and make use of tools and technologies to enhance their work for the DoD. PROJECT DEPENDENCIES AND SCOPE: Though we recommend offering trainings on the Tango Interactive collaboration system periodically as long as Tango continues to be used at ARL, we have not included them here as deliverables because FSU is not in a position to deliver them. We recommend that such trainings be provided by Derek Moses (half-time I/C on-site) or by purchasing them from WebWisdom.com. The Gateway PSE Developers Workshop will be a collaborative effort with the Ohio Supercomputer Center, our partner in the Gateway project, and may be offered jointly with ASC MSRC, who also sponsors Gateway. The value of this workshop will depend on progress in the Gateway project itself, particularly in the development of a limited number of additional PSEs to insure that we have the "right" interface between the PSE and the Gateway system.
