1 quotemeta("string") protects all regular expression metacharacters
  • [ab] matches a or b in a regular expression
  • quotemeta("[ab]") becomes \[ab\] and matches string [ab]
2 quotemeta("string") is equivalent to "\Qstring\E" where "string" is interpolated before protection
